Osmanthus x fortunei 'San Jose'
Oleaceae

ORIGIN: Garden Origin.
Original species (
O. heterophyllus x O. fragrans) native
to Taiwan and other parts of Eastern Asia
.

USDA PLANT HARDINESS ZONE:
7-10

SOIL:
Moderately Moist/Well Drained

EXPOSURE: Full Sun - Part Shade

GENERAL HABIT: Evergreen shrub, 15-20 ft, (4.5-6
m), dense, oval rounded. Fairly slow growing.

FOLIAGE: Leave opposite arrangement, leathery, dull,
glossy deep green. Spiny-serrated margins in juvenile
leaves and
somewhat entire as it matures.

FLOWER: Axillary, cream-beige flowers are deliciously
scented and flower in fall.

COMMENTS:
An excellent substitute for Osmanthus fragrans, which is
not fully hardy in the Pacific Northwest.
'San Jose' started
as a one gallon plant 2 years ago and has grown rather
quickly compared to the
other form at Landwave. It is not
as dense in terms of foliage (with finer serrations and
somewhat narrower leaves) and the flowers don't seem to
be as large and full. (contradicts what the
OSU Landscape
Plants
website says about 'San Jose' and makes me wonder
what form I really have!)
