Hedychium densiflorum
Zingiberaceae
ORIGIN: Eastern Himalayas
USDA PLANT HARDINESS ZONE: 7-9
SOIL: Moist, fairly well drained.
EXPOSURE: Full Sun-Part Shade.
GENERAL HABIT: Herbaceous perennial emerging from
fleshy, aromatic rhizomes that produce a pseudobulbs from
previous year's growth. This species can grow beyond 36”
high x about 30” wide.
FOLIAGE & STEM: Narrow, almost grass-like foliage.
Medium to dark green in color.
FLOWER: Late Summer - Mid-Fall (in the Pacific
Northwest). Variable in color from pale yellows to deep
burnt orange
COMMENTS:
One of the more reliable hardy gingers for the temperate
climate. Requires full sun and moist soil to thrive and
flower. Leaf tips tend to burn in full sun and make for an
unsightly plant. Best planted in mass in part shade to retain
better foliage, but you may sacrifice flowers.
