Epimedium brachyrhizum
Berberidaceae
ORIGIN: China
USDA PLANT HARDINESS ZONE: 6-9
SOIL: Moist, Well Drained.
EXPOSURE: Filtered Light to Part Shade
GENERAL HABIT: Herbaceous evergreen perennial
emerging from woody rhizomes. Plant grows to 6-10” high x
15-20” wide.
FOLIAGE: Coarse, trifoliate, dull green mature foliage that
undulate slightly and have a few minute spines/hairs on the
edges. New growth is a pale bronze-red with faint red
mottling.
FLOWER: Main flush takes place in mid-March-April here
in the Pacific Northwest. Stout sprays of 1" flowers with pale
pink petals and lighter white or shell pink sepals. The long
inner spurs can be a slightly deeper pink towards the center
with broader pink sepals.
COMMENTS:
A highly recommended species for its large flowers. Very
similar to E. leptorhizum, but somewhat larger foliage and
flowers. It is very short growing in stature and has a
moderate growth rate. Though evergreen, previous year's
foliage should be trimmed back to allow new foliage and
flowers.
