GENERAL HABIT: Herbaceous evergreen perennial
emerging from woody rhizomes. Plant grows to 20-25”
high x 25-30” wide.
FOLIAGE: Glabrous, trifoliate, medium green mature
foliage that undulate slightly and have a few minute
spines on the edges. New spring growth is bronzy-pink
with red mottling,
FLOWER: Main flush takes place in April here in the
Pacific Northwest. Arching sprays of 1" flowers with
dark lavender maroon petals and lighter white or pale
lilac sepals. The inner spurs are long, curly
violet/purple with broader lavender sepals.
COMMENTS:
One of the most beautiful of the Chinese species that is
easy to grow once established. While the plant remains
evergreen, previous year's foliage should be cut back
in late winter before new growth and flowers begin.
