Dichroa febrifuga    (UBC - GUIZHOU CLONE)
Hydrangeaceae

ORIGIN: Guizhou, China

USDA PLANT HARDINESS ZONE: 7-9

SOIL: Rich, moist and well drained.

EXPOSURE: Part-Full Shade

GENERAL HABIT: Short, semi-evergreen, sprawling
shrub to about 2-3 ft. & about 5ft. wide.

FOLIAGE: Elliptically oval, medium-deep green with a
slight bluish cast near the petioles in acidic soils.
Evergreen, but semi-evergreen in colder climates.

FLOWER: Small, dense umbels of mauve-pink to pale
blue flowers (depending on soil acidity).

COMMENTS:
A most exciting plant when in full fruit. This clone from the
University of British Columbia turned many heads as it
grew so beautifully in the woodlands at Heronswood
(Kingston, WA), and the Bloedel Reserve. Metallic, lapiz
blue fruit ornate this short, sprawling shrub. Experiments
here at Landwave have shown that not only flower color is
determined by soil acidity, but fruit color as well as
vegetative cuttings were taken from the clone, planted out
and flowered the following year with pale mauve flowers
and fruit. After an application of a acidic fertilizer, the
following year produced the blue flowers and exquisite
fruit!

This plant thrives best in the moist woodland with adequate
water and moisture and seems to prefer full-filtered shade.
