Cardiocrinum giganteum var. yunnanense
Liliaceae
ORIGIN: Western China, Eastern Himalayas
USDA PLANT HARDINESS ZONE: 7-9
SOIL: Rich, moist, but well drained
EXPOSURE: Part Shade
GENERAL HABIT: Bulbous, herbaceous perennial herb.
Generally shorter than straight species C. giganteum
reaching about 4-6 ft in height when in flower. This variety
also tends to have deep red, almost black stems
Considered monocarpic with the main bulb dying once it
flowers, but several bulblets are left behind along with seed
capsules filled with seeds.
FOLIAGE: Chordate and large, similar to a Hosta leaf.
Medium-dark green, glabrous foliage. This variety tends to
have bronze-red new foliage in spring that eventually turns
green over the summer. (pictured)
FLOWER: Funnel shaped, cream white flowers with a
central red-purple blotch in the center. Deliciously
perfumed. Smaller and narrower petals compared to C.
giganteum.
COMMENTS:
Plants do best when started as a young bulb or seedling.
Plant bulbs shallowly and protect tender foliage from slugs.
v. yunnanese appears to be more adaptable and more in
scale for small gardens and containers. Many plantsmen
also say it's more garden worthy. These photos represent a
batch of bulbs imported from China. (L-35 and L-36)

A shorter, but very fine form. Perhaps a different species?
