Albizia julibrissin 'Summer Chocolate'
Fabaceae
ORIGIN: Garden Origin (Japan)
USDA PLANT HARDINESS ZONE: 7-9
SOIL: Well drained
EXPOSURE: Full Sun - Part Shade
GENERAL HABIT:
Broadleaf deciduous tree, 20 ft (6 m) tall to 15 ft (4.6 m)
wide, vase-shaped with domed canopy.
FOLIAGE:
Fine, pinnately-compound foliage emerges green, then
becomes dark red purple and by summer reddish-bronze
or brown. Leaves tend to close up come sundown, but
come back to life the following day when the sun hits it
(natural plant response to conserve moisture).

Dense inflorescenses of flowers with puffy, prominent
stamens that are pale pink and somewhat scented.
COMMENTS:
A much sought after selection of the popular "Silk
Tree".Slower growing than the straight species, 'Summer
Chocolate' is taking its time getting established in
Landwave after being in the ground for almost 4 years
planted directly in the native soil with very minimal
fertilizer.
Found in 1990 as a seedling in a planting of Albizia
julibrissin in Kawaguchi City, Japan by Dr. Masato
Yokoi.
